Mercury by Hope Larson

Larson, H. (2010). Mercury. New York: Anthenum. ISBN: 1416935886

Plot Summary
This graphic novel is set in present day Nova Scotia and it shows how the past collides with the present in a dramatic tale of corruption, love, and family ties. In the present, Tara Fraser is living separate from her mother after their farmhouse burns down mysteriously. Tara soon discovers that like her mother, she has supernatural powers and a connection with her ancestor Josey Fraser. Her and Josey hold more than DNA in common, they also hold the same mysterious and powerful necklace that could ruin everything. In order to survive, Tara must take control of her destiny.

Critical Evaluation
This graphic novel has a taste of history, suspense, mystery and love. Usually, past and present books tend to be a little confusing to follow, but this book was easy to go back and forth and the story kept me engrossed from start to finish. The characters were well written and heartfelt. The illustrations were amazing, and it kept the story flowing. The characters are simple and even though this story was a fast read, I found myself thinking about these characters well after I finished.
